Four Mile Sunrise - April 12, 2009

Sitting on the Edge of the World - Santa Cruz, California
Big On Black
Planet Earth

I went out for sunrise to scout out a new spot. It wasn't my first choice, and it wasn't even my second choice, but... Spot #1 was Wilder Ranch, but the lot was closed and the walk would be that much longer if I needed to park along Highway 1 instead of in the lot. I proceeded up the coast to another access point, one I have never been to, and killed about fifteen minutes realizing I was NOT in a good spot for photography with seemingly endless trails to nowhere. I jogged back to my truck for my third option.

As the blue hour continued to fade, I settled in on the bluff at the far northern edge of Four Mile beach in Santa Cruz. I really felt like I was sitting on the edge of the world. The bluff below and to the left in this shot is about 20 feet below me and in total, I am about 30-40 feet above the ocean. The first hints of pink were filling the sky, and the moon was about to set on the horizon.

The rock textures and colors were really drawing my eye and I knew I wanted to include as much of them as possible. I know it sounds corny, but I felt like I was on another world. I love it when that happens, when the elements totally transport you out of the "norm" and into this other space, even if it still is on planet Earth.
