One of the fun parts of being too poor to travel much, is
that I simply have to focus on exploring more of my own backyard.
And since my backyard includes rugged rocky coast, sandy beaches,
and underwater kelp forests, I consider myself very lucky to
have so much to photograph within an hour's drive.
As I expand my range to the north, one of the spots I am focusing
in on is called Greyhound Rock. I shot
here last month and on this, my second trip, I knew I wanted
to see the south end of the beach. I settled on some rocks
where I wouldn't get pounded by the big sets of waves that
were rolling in. The wind kicked up that salty schmegma we
all love to clean off our filters, so the chamois and cleaner
fluid were kept in my coat pocket for easy access.
I kept the exposures short in order to capture the surf action
which wound up working better from a schmegma standpoint. I
really liked the smoothed over 30 second to minute long exposures
I shot later with the fog bank smearing across the sky, but
unfortunately, the fog wasn't the only thing smearing things
up. Yup, the schmegma factored in those longer shots quite
heavily, and in the end, they were ruined.
Luckily, the drive is short, and I will have opportunities
for those long exposures in the future.
