Wave Panning - March 18, 2009

Listening to That Inner Voice

I woke up for sunrise on Wednesday and drove up and down the coast without a clue as to what I wanted to shoot or where I wanted to be. It's my own fault for going to bed at 2am and setting the alarm for 6am.

Alas, I found myself at Four Mile just outside of Santa Cruz. I shot all of 9 photos that had rocks and all that other stuff we tend to love...you know clouds, silky water, etc, etc. However, I kept looking at the waves and was drawn to them.

Maybe it was the steady stream of surfers and their dedication to early mornings. Whatever it was, I felt the need to try something new. "Just do it" I heard myself saying. So, I packed the wide angle lens away and pulled out the telephoto zoom and decided to try something new. I threw out those leading lines, rules of thirds, and simply tried my hand at a new technique:

wave panning.

I've seen it done to the point where I was impressed with the results and knew going in some shutter speeds to try. I also knew the success rate is pretty darn low for this type of stuff...at least for a newbie like me.

I had fun, and sometimes that's what it's all about!
