California Sea Lion ( Zalophus californianus)

Three days aboard the Vision for some diving
in the Northern Channel Islands. We hit some heavy sea lion
action at Boomerang Banks off San Miguel before retreating
to the back side of Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz islands. These
shallow dives allowed me to work on my macro skills. Besides
leaving my camera stuck at ISO 800 (ouch!) for those two days,
I had fun and am proud of my patience getting some of these
shots. The back and forth of the surge meant waiting for minutes
to pass until a lull allowed a composition and focus for a
'keeper' shot. Here are a few more images not featured on the
home page slideshow.
